A Brief Bio.

I am a single Mother living, working and writing in Middle England. I've described this as a bit like Middle Earth in it's beauty but the trees don't walk. Born in 1969, I'm told I saw the moon landings, but being only four months old I can't remember! I try to live in as green a way as possible, growing some of my own crops, keeping my three chickens for eggs and doing as much reducing, reusing and recycling as is possible. I'm a pisces and a rooster, depending which zodiac system you prefer and my favourite colours are green and purple.

The Beginning

The Portal series was born quietly on November 1st 2005 as Kate rolled over one morning to find Hayley had sneaked her way into her mother's bed. From there it grew into a tale of kidnap, escape, friendship and magic as Sam returned and Lily turned out to be so much more than she appeared.

Sarah's first novel was inspired and provoked when a very good friend uttered those impossible to deny words, "Go on, I dare you." one the eve of the NaNoWriMo challenge. The rest, as they say, is history. So, big thanks to Kris (of EcoKnits, got to put her a plug here haven't I?) Without you I'd never have done it.

The Portal Between by Sarah Barnard

Sam was Kate's best friend since they met at school, together they grew, had children and Sam was there as Kate married Jack. But one autumn Sam vanished after a row, leaving her children behind and Kate stepped in. With Lily's help Kate has coped with her own children and Sam's but at a cost. Jack has left her and she's struggling when Sam suddenly reappears and Kate's world is torn apart as magic is made real and Lily isn't who she seems to be, and neither is Sam. As the demonic Ametsam relentlessly pursues them it takes more than one of the three friends to find him and even then the journey isn't easy and lives get more tangled than they could imagine and in ways they never dreamed. The Portal Between is the first book in the Portal series and Sarah Barnard's debut novel.

At the end of The Portal Between, Lily returned alone; Kate hoped Sam would follow and Kate's world was rocked again. Sam has problems of her own, the magic is out of control, and Lily can't help this time. Kate tries to pull her life back together but it's hard and she finds comfort where she can. But who else can wield the magic? Who challenges Sam's right to rule?
